UFC 145lb Mess

With The Korean Zombie taking on long-time Feather Weight champ Jose Aldo in a couple of weeks, the state of the 145lb division has come under scrutiny and is frankly, a bit of a mess.

In recent months, Feather Weight has become a gold-mine for great fights. TKZ vs Dustin Poirier was awarded FOTY last year, and was a fight I did not regret staying up until 6am for the night before a final University exam!

Since that battle royal, Lamas has edged passed the Japanese star, Hatsu Hioki, and crushed Erick Koch who was ironically supposed to fight Aldo for the belt last summer. Just a few weeks back we watched Swanson endure a tough opening round to end up stopping the European tank Dennis Siver late in the fight and solidify his claim to a rematch with Aldo. Later on that very same card saw Edgar, the rightful 155lb champion, get back to winning terms by decisioning a very impressive Charles Oliveira.

We still have Chad Mendes vs Clay Guida on the cards soon and haven’t mentioned Nik Lentz who has quietly been dominating his opponents since joining the ‘45ers. The current rankings have the top five contenders as; Mendes, Lamas, Edgar, Swanson and Jung, yet it’s the bottom of that list facing Aldo next. With Mendes fighting Guida I expect we will have a new number one contender, although Lamas probably has the best claim to be the next challenger.

It seems almost certain that Edgar will be facing Swanson next, so Lamas is left without a top five opponent. No matter, The Carny makes a lot of sense, people have got title shots off wins over far worse opponents, and Lentz needs the step up to prove himself to doubters.

With this, we have a bit of a tournament forming. I’ll make it clearer;

Now, it’s almost certain Aldo will come through still holding the belt, but atleast he’ll have totally cleared out the division, leaving him free to move up to 155 and get a new buckle in the weight class, thereby leaving one of his victims to get to the top of the pile.
